1301PE is pleased to present a solo-exhibition with Rirkrit Tiravanija entitled, Demonstration Drawings. Featuring over 100 drawings, this exhibition will be the first complete examination of this drawing series. An internationally recognized artist, Tiravanija is revered for his pioneering approach to contemporary art and shifting the paradigm of interactivity.
Tiravanija has commissioned artists (mostly former students) in Thailand to redraw images of current demonstrations taken from the International Herald Tribune. These highly charged images are more about an idea of the world than a fascination with the hand. Demonstration Drawings examines a conceptual practice, about people gathering together and acting out ideas. Moreover, we find the act of redrawing the collected images, adds another meaning as well. The everyday practice of collecting, the ritual of reading the news, of drawing brings you closer to the images despite the original photojournalistic distance. Far from bellowing a romantic nostalgia for the 1960's, Tiravanija's Demonstration Drawings remains rooted in the present, and the actions of here and now.
